Endless Blue Edge
Jodie Whalen

Endless Blue Edge by multi-disciplinary artist Jodie Whalen, is a new video work created for the URL and transformed into an all-encompassing site-specific video installation for IRL. Imagery of the sky captured in Western Sydney is distorted and paired with an original soundscape to offer viewers a site to contemplate the borders of internal and external landscapes, belief and transformation.

The repetition, replication and degradation of the imagery, sounds and motifs in Endless Blue Edge is harnessed to explore how meaning moves through, and translates between forms, signifying time and transformation.

Symbols of earthly experience and liminal space become metaphors for our understating and experience of the unknown – a window into different realms of physical, metaphysical, and spiritual possibilities.

Endless Blue Edge is driven by a desire to give physical form to the intangibility of fraught emotional states such as grief, anger, fear, apathy and hopefulness. It seeks to be a site for intimacy, desire and the body experienced individually and collectively. The online work on the BLEED website is personal, intimate and introspective, whilst the onsite component of the work at Campbelltown Arts Centre is intended to be a shared experience.

Endless Blue Edge originates from my desire to give the intangibilities of grief a physical presence. The work coalesces my own personal history and elements of popular Western culture into emotionally fraught, symbolically dense and sublime environments.

From the beginning of this project, I carried a camera with me to capture sunsets – especially those that are sublime, psychedelic, and dramatic in their colour and structure. Each sunset I documented was captured in Western Sydney and has a direct relationship with the site where the work has been developed and is presented.

When bringing the imagery of the work together, I start by composing a soundscape. This sonic narrative leads the placement of the imagery, the transitions, and what effects I use. Through this process, I am distorting images and sound to negotiate the borders between our internal and external worlds, and thus how the digital bleeds between into these spaces.

At sunset, on the opening and closing Friday evenings of BLEED, Campbelltown Arts Centre’s facade becomes the site for Jodie Whalen’s video installation Endless Blue Edge. This ephemeral video installation responds to the timing and passing of sunset, offering viewers a transformative site of contemplation – exploring the boundaries between our internal and external landscapes.

Imagery of the sky and sunsets captured throughout Western Sydney will be projected onto the façade. Audiences will be enveloped by an all-encompassing spectacle of video, audio and light as the sun sets and the digital replication of the sky is projected onto the building where physical and digital worlds bleed into one.

Endless Blue Edge explores how the sunset, a symbol of earthly experience and liminal space, acts as a window to different realms of physical, metaphysical, and spiritual possibilities. As an immersive installation, audiences share experiences of intimacy, desire and the body. The hard and soft boarders between internal and externals selves blur as the sky descends from light into darkness.

Endless Blue Edge by Jodie Whalen is a video work intended to be experienced online. Connected to, and reflective of a site-specific video installation at Campbelltown Arts Centre, the online offering is a more personal and intimate experience of the work.

Documenting the sky in Western Sydney, Whalen does not apply any editing or filters to manipulate the image. Images of the sky are simply presented in its natural state. The sublime range of colours cast by the sky are intended to make the viewer feel something unearthly.

Alongside this imagery of the sky, Whalen has photographed physical objects, that when manipulated, reflect the sublime light and colour of the setting sky. By transferring physical scenes and objects digitally through photography, Jodie intends to impart a physical weight and space to the digital copies of the light reflecting materials and sky.

As the sun sets, light and colours change as day transitions into night. Endless Blue Edge reminds us that the sky is omnipresent but always changing, signifying the passing of time and the experience of transformation that we carry both in our bodies and minds. This hyperreal video and accompanying soundscape offers viewers a site to contemplate their internal landscapes.
