BLEED (Biennial Live Event in the Everyday Digital) interrogates the relationship between the digital and the live.

BLEED (Biennial Live Event in the Everyday Digital) interrogates the relationship between the digital and the live.

Developing new contemporary art practices that are both enabled by and critical of the digital public sphere, BLEED’s unique model allows artists and audiences to experience cutting-edge art, culture and ideas. Across diverse mediums, time zones and borders, BLEED probes the extent to which digital technology can deepen our understanding of one another.

BLEED was conceived by Campbelltown Arts Centre (NSW) and Arts House (VIC). The first edition took place in 2020 as a solely online event responding to the question: ‘what does the online feel like?’

In 2022, BLEED welcomed Taiwanese partner organisations, Museum of Contemporary Art (MoCA),Taipei and Taipei Performing Arts Center (TPAC). The project’s scope expanded to include live performances, exhibitions and public programs. BLEED 2022 considered the potential and problems of borders, with a program consisting of 9 artist commissions, 9 digital works and 8 live art experiences.

In 2024, BLEED expands the conversation with a consortium of national partners including Arts House (VIC), Campbelltown Arts Centre (NSW) and PICA – Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts (WA). The program features artists across this continent and beyond.

From URL to IRL and back again, BLEED, the artworks and Echo public programs presented as part of it, greet audiences where they already reside: in their communities, hyper-connected and virtually networked.

About the Organisations

ARTS HOUSE
Arts House, 521 Queensberry Street, North Melbourne, VIC 3051

Arts House produces and presents a year-round program of contemporary art and performance. We create space for audiences and communities to gather, discuss and experience new ideas, new people and new worlds. Working purposefully to support independent artists and the small-medium sector, we believe the arts are for everyone.

Our program is developed with guidance from our Creative Advisory Group, and informed by the commitments of our Equity—Builder and Disability and Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP).

Our work is underpinned by calls for sovereignty and self-determination by all First Nations peoples, including traditional custodians on the lands on which Arts House stands: the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung peoples of the Eastern Kulin Nation, and close neighbours, the Boon Wurrung peoples.

CAMPBELLTOWN ARTS CENTRE
Campbelltown Arts Centre (C-A-C), 1 Art Gallery Rd, Campbelltown, NSW 2560

Located on the edge of Sydney, Campbelltown Arts Centre (C-A-C) is in a unique position to forge collaborative exchanges between artists, disciplines and communities through the creation of new curatorial situations and challenging streams of practice.

Using the edge as a starting point, Campbelltown Arts Centre creates a secure platform for communities and artists to take risks, challenge perceptions, confront issues and raise questions through the commissioning of new works. These new works invite collaboration, partnership, local, national and international dialogue, the juxtaposition of new and traditional techniques and cross-disciplinary approaches.

Contemporary artists are at the forefront of Campbelltown Arts Centre’s programming and through consultation with communities, we deliver a program that profiles contemporary visual arts, performance, dance, music, live art and emergent practices.

PERTH INSTITUTE OF CONTEMPORARY ARTS
Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts (PICA), Perth Cultural Centre, 51 James St Perth, WA 6000

Housed in an iconic heritage building in the heart of Perth, PICA is the place to experience the very best of local, Australian and international contemporary art in Western Australia.

Over its 30-year history, PICA has operated as both a producing and presenting organisation, delivering an annual program of changing exhibitions, seasons in contemporary dance, experimental theatre, new music and live art as well as a range of artist-in-residence programs.
PICA works with artists who are trail-blazers, exemplars, innovators and change-makers and acts as a site for challenging and timely conversations.

Its programs are carefully crafted, ensuring connections are forged not only between artists and audiences but across art forms, cultures and geographies. For artists, audiences and other communities it serves, PICA is a meeting place, a provocateur, a resource and most importantly a partner in the realisation of big and new ideas.
